Children’s Mental Health Services is a Lead Agency overseeing programs and services across Hastings, Northumberland and Prince Edward Counties. At CMHS, we strive to offer seamless and meaningful mental health treatment services for children, youth and their families. Our staff are experienced in providing evidence based treatment to children, youth and families and we work with our clients and their family to set goals and achieve them together.
We are presently seeking a qualified Child and Youth Worker to join our Live-In Treatment team to fill a temporary part-time replacement of 12 months starting in April 2021 within our Residence located in Corbyville.
Duties and responsibilities
As a Residential Service Child and Youth Worker, you will be directly responsible for providing quality therapeutic residential services for children, youth and families to ensure a smooth transition back to community, family and school environments. More specifically, you will work with youth aged 12 to17 years who want to get control over their behaviours relating to self-harm, suicidal ideation, and/or suicide attempts and on making a life worth living. As part of a dedicated team of CYW applying the DBT treatment model, you will contribute to support and serve this child and youth population in a home-like environment.
Required qualifications, skills and knowledge
Advanced Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Worker or equivalent education, training and experience in the field of Child and Youth Work.
A minimum of two years of experience in providing mental health services to children and youth, preferably in a live-in treatment/residential setting.
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the field of residential and community based services.
Demonstrated ability to form meaningful relationships with children, youth and parents/guardians.
Ability to handle emergency, crisis, and hostile behaviour situations.
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement behaviour management strategies and counselling groups/programs.
Ability to work independently and as a team member to achieve program goals.
Resourcefulness and flexibility to meet the needs of clients/families within the service.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Computer literacy skills and recreation skills.
Valid Ontario Drivers license·
Willingness to work all rotating shifts and be available for "order in" work in emergencies. The shifts are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Work involves physical components related to housekeeping, taking part in sports and physical activities with youth and other related tasks.
Work involves food preparation and driving assignments.
Work involves supporting/managing clients with, at times, violent and aggressive behaviour. This may include engaging physically with the youth should there be a safety concern.
